Ocean's Fury

Ocean's Fury

There's a moment paddling out through surf when the sea stops being scenery and starts being something that's happening to you. The horizon disappears. There's a wall of water standing over you and it's the only thing in the world, and it isn't fear exactly, it's attention. Everything narrows down to the next few seconds.

That's why there's no horizon in this painting. There's no line to steady yourself against and no far edge to look towards, just water, right in front of you, all of it at once.

You paddle straight at it, edge the boat and either break through it or over it, and in that second or two everything mixes: boat, sea, sky, spray, your own bright colours. That's the painting. Get it right and you slice over the top and land on the calmer water behind it, and you've barely got your breath before the next one is on you.

Get it wrong and you're upside down. The world goes dark and grey and sandy, bubbles everywhere, glimpses of colour from the boat, and you can feel yourself being carried backwards towards the beach. Roll up, and you're straight back into paddling out again.

The oranges, yellows and reds are the colours we often paddle in. We wear them so the sea can't lose us, and I've never been able to see them as safety gear. To me they mean adventure, nerve and joy: the colours you put on when you've decided to go out anyway.

What I wanted to paint is what those moments actually feel like, which is exhilaration. The raw power of the sea, the speed of the boat and your own skill all working at once to keep you upright and moving through it. When it comes together it's an extraordinary thing to be part of, and it builds a bond with the water that's still with you hours after you're back on dry land.

There is a calmer place, out beyond the break, where you sit and rise and fall on big green swell and get your breath back and wait for the wave you'll ride in on. This painting isn't that. This is the getting out there.

The gold leaf is where the light catches the spray. Scattered rather than placed, because that's how it happens: a flash in one place, nothing in the next, gone before you've properly registered it.

If you'd like to see how the painting was built up in layers, I've written about it in my Journal.

Buying Original Art

A painting is the one thing in a room that changes. Texture and paint catch the light differently through the day, so the work is never quite the same twice. That is what an original gives you that a print cannot.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if it does not work in my room?

Please ask before you buy. Send me a photograph of your wall and I will place the painting into it to scale, so you can see exactly how it will hang. If it still is not right when it arrives, see Delivery and Returns.

How long will my painting last?

Painted with artist-quality archival pigments and finished with a UV-absorbing artists' varnish that will not yellow.

Your painting is made to live in a real room, in normal daylight, for a very long tim

Payments

What payment methods do you accept?

I accept all major debit and credit cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal, Shop Pay and Klarna. All payments are taken securely through Shopify. I never see or store your card details.

What is Klarna?

Klarna is a payment option available at checkout that allows you to pay for your order in a different way, either later or in instalments, rather than in full at the time of purchase. You choose Klarna at the payment stage in the same way you would choose a card or PayPal. The options available to you, and any terms that apply, are set by Klarna and shown to you before you confirm. Klarna is a regulated lender and the agreement is between you and them, not with me. Your order is dispatched exactly as it would be with any other payment method.

What currency are your prices in?

All prices are shown in pounds sterling and include free UK delivery.

Do you take payment plans for commissions?

Commissions are agreed in writing before work begins and are paid with a deposit at the start and the balance on completion, before delivery. If you would like to discuss timings, please just ask.

Is anything added at checkout?

No. The price you see is the price you pay. UK delivery is included and there are no hidden fees.

Something not answered here?

Please do get in touch. I would much rather answer a question than leave you wondering.

Delivery and Returns

Delivery is included

Every painting on this site is sent with free UK delivery, fully insured, already included in the price. There is nothing added at checkout and nothing to calculate. The figure you see beside the work is the figure you pay.

I pack every painting myself. These are textured surfaces with gold, silver and copper leaf, so they travel face-protected, corner-guarded and well packaged.

In London, I deliver by hand

If you are in London, I may bring the work to you myself and I will be in touch to arrange a time that suits you.

I do this because it is the best part of the process. I get to see where the painting is going to live. If you would like advice on where best to hang your new painting, I can help. We can talk about it there and then rather than by email a week later. There is no charge for this.

Elsewhere in the UK

Small and medium works travel by insured courier and usually arrive within five to ten working days.

Larger works, above around a metre, go with a specialist fine art courier who runs scheduled routes rather than next-day services. Please allow up to fourteen working days for these. It is slower, and it is worth it: the work travels with other paintings, in a vehicle built for the job, handled by people who move art for a living.

Whichever route your painting takes, I will email you when it leaves me and let you know roughly when to expect it.

How your painting arrives

Ready to hang. Every canvas comes stung and with the sides painted, so there is no framing to arrange and nothing further to buy. I include a signed certificate of authenticity and a how to care for it note.

Open the parcel while the driver is still there if you can, and keep the packaging until you are happy with the work.

If something is not right

Tell me straight away and send a photograph. Everything is fully insured in transit and I will put it right, either with a repair, a replacement or a full refund. This has not happened yet, and if it ever does it is my problem to solve, not yours.

Changing your mind

If you buy an original from the shop and it is not what you hoped for, you have fourteen days from the day it arrives to let me know you would like to return it, and a further fourteen days to send it back. It needs to come back in its original packaging and in the condition it arrived in. Return postage is yours to cover, and I will refund the full purchase price once the work is safely home.

Commissioned paintings are made for you specifically and cannot be returned, which is exactly why the commission process has an approval stage built into it before the work is finished.

Outside the UK

I send work overseas by arrangement rather than through the shop, so that we can find the right route and the right cost for where you are. Email me with the painting and your country and I will come back to you with a proper quote.

Before you buy

If you are weighing up whether a painting will work in your room, please ask. Send me a photograph of the wall and the measurements, and I will return the photograph with the painting on your wall. I want you to be happy with your choice of painting before you buy rather than have you wondering afterwards.

Email me or use the contact page. I answer everything myself.
