About Elemental

Nature and the elements have inspired artists since the first marks were made on cave walls. There is something enduring about that impulse: to look at the natural world and feel compelled to respond to it.

Elemental brought together four female artists, each with a deeply personal relationship with nature. Annette Price, Yang Xu, Faye Knight and Mee Mee Chai approach the natural world through their own distinct experiences and filters, working in acrylics, oils and cold wax, with palette knives, brushes and a range of mark-making tools. Their styles move between impressionism and contemporary abstraction, but they share a common thread: a desire to get beneath the surface of what they see, to find the elemental forces that shape landscapes, rivers, flora and the seasons.

The result was an exhibition of paintings that feel rooted in lived experience rather than observation alone. Each work has a story behind it.

  • Annette Price

My work explores water as a lived experience. Thirty years spent as a photographer specialising in water subjects, and a life kayaking, diving and pushing into wild places, means water is not just a subject for me. It is the perspective through which I see almost everything I paint.

For Elemental, I turned to the meeting point of water and British woodlands in spring. Brooks threading through trees brimming with new growth, surfaces alive with reflected light, wildflowers edging the banks in soft, fleeting colour. I worked with flowing brushwork suggesting water, and contrasting sharper palette knife marks to suggest the new life in and above the water. The paintings are not records of specific places. They are my responses to how woodlands in spring feel, expressed in abstract form.

    Artist Statement

  • Yang Xu

Yang Xu (Tzu) is an adventurous artist who always seeks new and fun ways to express the world through her artworks. She's known for her utilisation of bold colours and brushstrokes to capture the spirit and emotions of the painting subjects.

Yang's artwork often reflects a fusion of realism and abstraction, allowing her to explore both the tangible and intangible aspects of our existence. By juxtaposing recognizable elements with more ambiguous forms, she strives to create a dialogue between the familiar and the unknown, encouraging viewers to interpret and connect with the artwork on a personal level.

Ultimately, her goal as an artist is to transport viewers to a realm of contemplation and wonder. She aspires to create visual poetry that invites introspection, sparks curiosity, and celebrates the profound beauty that surrounds us. With each brushstroke, she endeavours to ignite a sense of connection between the artwork, the viewer, and the world at large.
Yang is environmentally conscious and uses eco-friendly art materials where possible.

  • Faye Knight

Faye Knight is a contemporary acrylics and mixed media artist. Established on the Oxfordshire and West Berkshire art scene. Her vibrant, impressionist studies of the English countryside now sell worldwide.

Her cottage studio is situated off the beaten track, amongst rolling farmland and winding wooded paths, each season provides an endless variety of textures and hues to be captured in her paintings.

If a running theme could be suggested for Faye's work, 'Be in touch with nature' would summarise it very well. With names including: 'The Quiet Place', 'Into the Woods', 'The Warm Scent of Summer' and 'Joy', each painting speaks of the release found in abandoning our senses to the timeless, intoxicating beauty of the hidden places in ournatural world.

Faye is an accredited member of West Berkshire and North Hampshire Open Studios and a member of West Ox Arts Gallery. You can also see
selected works exhibited at Oxford Art Weeks during May, the Artysan Gallery in Stow-on-the-Wold, and the Howarth's Gallery Newbury.

  • The Visual Artists Association (VAA) is an organisation dedicated to supporting professional artists. When they heard about the exhibition, they proposed joining forces to host an exclusive viewing and networking evening during its run, and we were delighted to say yes.

The event took place on the 5th of March, and brought together artists for an evening of conversation, good food and drink, and of course the paintings themselves. Agnes from the VAA hosted the evening with warmth and real skill, helping everyone connect and making it a genuinely enjoyable occasion. It was a pleasure to welcome so many new faces into the space.
