About the painting
It was late spring in 2022, when I wild camped in a small clearing, beside a lake, in a Berkshire woodland. I was surrounded by ferns, deciduous trees and pretty yellow flowers and collected sand and a few dried fern leaves from the forest floor to incorporate into the painting, that I was planning.
Later, I began the painting by applying acrylic paint using a number of differently shaped pallet knives, sliding wet paint across wet paint. Dabbing colour and drawing sharp lines onto the canvas to reflect the branches with pops of colour referencing the little woodland flowers and the sunlight dancing on leaves.
I incorporated the sand and fern leaves into the painting, to add texture and depth and to connect the painting to the woodlands and the water's edge, that inspired it, I was looking to capture the essence of the landscape. The inclusion of the three fern leaves is subtle, and you’ll have to look to find them.
Whenever I look at this painting it brings back fond memories of my wild camping adventure. I hope that who ever gives this painting a home will enjoy its peaceful warmth and woodland vibes and that it will bring a sense of adventure to which ever room they choose to hang it.
